Introduction
Change is the law of nature and as it is very apparent in
the present library culture, libraries are not untouched by the change which is affecting almost every
activity in the library. A few decades back Lancaster talked about the
“paperless society”. R.G.Parashwar stated in his one book “paperless society’ is
a distance dream. That day has gone when it was only a dream, now that very
idea sounded whimsical all over the world. However, we took a step towards a paperless
society very rapidly and the most of libraries particularly university &
special libraries, began allocating separate funds for e-resources.
E-resources
An electronic resource is defined as a resource which requires
computer access or any electronic product
that delivers a collection of
data, be it text referring to full text bases, electronic journals, image
collections, other multimedia products and numerical, graphical or time based,
as a commercially available title that has
been published with an aim to being marketed.
These may be delivered on CD ROM, on tape, via internet and
so on. Over the past few years, a numbers of techniques and related standards
have been developed which allow documents to be created and distributed in
electric form. Hence to cope with the present situation, libraries are shifting
towards new media, namely electronic resources for their collection
developments that the demands of users are better fulfilled. The e-resources on
magnetic and optical media have a vast impact on the collections of University
libraries. These are more useful due to inherent capabilities for manipulation
and searching, providing information
access is cheaper to acquiring information resources, savings in storage and maintenance
etc. and sometimes the electronic form is
the only alternative.
Types of e-resources
The e-resources are basically divided in two major
types are:
1. Online e-resources, which may include :– e-journal (Full
text & bibliographic)
– e-books
– on-line Databases
– Web sites
2. Other electronic resources may include:
– CD ROM
– Diskettes
– Other portable computer databases
Definition.
An "electronic resource" is defined as any work
encoded and made available for access through the use of a computer. It
includes electronic data available by (1) remote access and (2) direct access
(fixed media). In other words: Remote access (electronic resources) refers to
the use of electronic resources via computer networks. (AACR2, 2002 edition;
glossary). Direct Access (electronic resources) refers to the use of electronic
resources via carriers (e.g., discs/disks, cassettes, cartridges) designed to
be inserted into a computerized device or its auxiliary equipment.
What Is Social Networking?
The
use of internet-based social media programs to make connections with friends,
family, classmates, customers and clients. Social networking can be done for
social purposes, business purposes or both. The programs show the associations
between individuals and facilitate the acquisition of new contacts. Examples of
social networking have included Facebook, LinkedIn, Classmates.com and Yelp.
Social networking is
the grouping of individuals into specific groups, like small rural communities
or a neighborhood subdivision, if you will. Although social networking is
possible in person, especially in the workplace, universities, and high
schools, it is most popular online.
When it
comes to online social networking, websites are commonly used. These websites
are known as social sites. Social networking websites function like an online
community of internet users. Depending on the website in question, many of
these online community members share common interests in hobbies, religion,
politics and alternative lifestyles. Once you are granted access to a social
networking website you can begin to socialize. This socialization may include
reading the profile pages of other members and possibly even contacting them.
Edublog
An edublog is a blog created
for educational purposes. Edublogs archive and support student and teacher learning by facilitating
reflection, questioning by self and others, collaboration and by providing contexts
for engaging in higher-order thinking. Edublogs proliferated when blogging architecture became
more simplified and teachers perceived the instructional potential of blogs as an online resource. The use of blogs has become popular in
education institutions including public schools and colleges. Blogs can be useful tools for sharing
information and tips among co-workers, providing
information for students, or keeping in contact with parents. Common examples include blogs
written by or for teachers, blogs maintained for the purpose of classroom instruction, or blogs
written about educational policy. Educators who blog are sometimes called edubloggers.
Uses of
edublogs
There are several uses of
edublogs. Some bloggers use their
blogs as a learning journal or a knowledge log to gather relevant information
and ideas, and communicate with other people. Some
teachers use blogs to keep in contact with students' parents. Some bloggers use blogs to record
their own personal life, and express emotions or feelings. Some instructors use blogs as an
instructional and assessment tool, and blogs can be used as a task management
tool. Blogs are used to teach
individuals about writing for an audience as they can be made public, and
blogging software makes it easier to create content for the Web without knowing
much HTML.
Edublogs can be used as
instructional resources, in which teachers can post tips, explanations or samples
to help students learn. The use of blogs in the classroom allows both the
teacher and student the ability to edit and add content at any time. The ability for both the teacher and
student to edit content allows for study to take place outside the classroom environment,
since blogs can usually be accessed using the URL of the blog on any computer.
Blogs increase exposure to other students from around the country or world,
while improving writing and communication skills. Teachers are using blogs as a
way to post important information such as homework, important dates, missed
lessons, projects, discussion
boards, and other useful classroom information that is accessible by
all. As noted, students can access this information from home, or from any
computer that is connected to the Internet.
Teachers and parents can also
use blogs in order to communicate with one another. They can be used to post
class announcements for parents or providing schedule reminders. Connecting to
a teacher's blog is also a convenient way for parents to find out daily
assignments so that they can monitor their children's progress and understand
classroom expectations.
Electronic journals
Electronic journals, also
known as ejournals, e-journals, and electronic serials, are scholarly
journals or
intellectual magazines that can be accessed via electronic
transmission. In practice, this means that they are usually published on the
Web. They are a specialized form of electronic document: they have the purpose of
providing material for academic research and study, and they are formatted
approximately like journal articles in traditional printed journals. Many
electronic journals are listed in directories such as the Directory of Open Access
Journals, and the articles indexed in bibliographic databases and search engines for the academic
discipline concerned.
Some electronic journals are
online-only journals; some are online versions of printed journals, and some
consist of the online equivalent of a printed journal, but with additional
online-only (sometimes video and interactive media) material.
Most commercial journals are subscription-based,
and/or allow pay-per-view access. Many universities subscribe in bulk
to packages of electronic journals, so as to provide access to them to their
students and faculty. It is generally also possible for individuals to purchase
an annual subscription to a journal from the original publisher.
An increasing number of
e-journals are available as open access journals, requiring no subscription and
offering free full-text articles and reviews to all. Individual articles from electronic journals may be found online for free in an ad-hoc
manner: in working
paper archives;
on personal homepages; and in the collections held in institutional repositories and subject repositories. Some commercial journals find
ways to offer free materials. They may offer their initial issue or issues
free, and then charge thereafter. Some give away their book reviews section for
free. Others offer the first few pages of each article for free.
Most electronic journals are
published in HTML and/or PDF formats, but some are available in only one
of the two formats. A small minority publish in DOC, and a
few are starting to add MP3 audio. Some early electronic journals were
first published in ASCII text, and some informally published ones
continue in that format.
Podcasting
A
podcast is a digital audio recording with or without images, which instructors
can use to deliver content to students in a easy asynchronous fashion.
Once generated, podcasts can be disseminated
online through personal websites or podcasts directories. Podcasting, the name
for this process ,is an amalgamation of
”broadcasting” and the acronym “POD”.POD stands for “portable on demand,”
and was first used to name Apple
Computers’ widely successful portable media player, the ipod. Now ,the terms “podcast” and “podcasting” are part of the American lexicon
and refer to the distribution of any downloadable digital audio file that can
be played on numerous devices such as computers, smart phones, i-pads ,and
other portable media devices.
Benefits of Podcasting in the classroom
Podcasting
gives educators an opportunity to bridge the traditional classroom setting with
progressive stage-of –the art technologies. There are several advantages of
bringing podcasting into the classroom for lectures and student assignments.
First,
podcasting is an exciting and novel means for students to take a more active
role in their learning experience. As students realize their podcast
assignments may be published online with hundreds of potential listeners
through free podcast directories their attention to the quality and detail of
their assignments improve.
Second
podcasting is adaptable to the students learning needs .Students can access the
material and as often as they would like, thereby reinforcing critical concepts or details
they have missed in the original classroom lecture. Third assignments that
require students to generate ,edit, and publish their own podcasts reinforce
critical communication skills such as writing a script that will be presented
online or in a classroom
Web-based learning
Web-based training (sometimes called e-learning) is anywhere, any-time instruction delivered over the Internet or a corporate intranet to browser-equipped learners. There are two primary models of Web-based instruction: synchronous (instructor-facilitated) and asynchronous (self-directed, self-paced). Instruction can be delivered by a combination of static methods (learning portals, hyperlinked pages, screen cam tutorials, streaming audio/video, and live Web broadcasts) and interactive methods (threaded discussions, chats, and desk-top video conferencing).
Short for Web based learning is a generic term for training and/or instruction delivered over the Internet or an intranet using a Web browser. Web-based training includes static methods -- such as streaming audio and video, hyperlinked Web pages, live Web broadcasts, and portals of information -- and interactive methods -- such as bulletin boards, chat rooms, instant messaging, video conferencing and discussion threads
.
E-Learning
e-learning includes numerous types of media that deliver text,
audio, images, animation, and streaming video, and includes technology
applications and processes such as audio or video tape, satellite TV, CD-ROM,
and computer-based learning, as well as local intranet/extranet and web-based learning. Information and communication systems, whether free-standing or based on either local networks or the
Internet in networked learning, underly many e-learning processes.
E-learning can occur in or out
of the classroom. It
can be self-paced, asynchronous learning or may be instructor-led, synchronous learning. E-learning is suited to distance
learning and
flexible learning, but it can also be used in conjunction with face-to-face
teaching, in which case the term blended
learning is
commonly used.
E-learning in learning and
education refers to the use of modern technology, such as computers, digital
technology, networked digital devices (e.g., the Internet) and associated
software and courseware. There are several aspects to describing the
intellectual and technical development of e-learning, which can be categorized
into discrete areas. These are addressed in turn in the sections of this
article:
1.
e-learning as an educational
approach or tool that
supports traditional subjects;
2.
e-learning as a technological
medium that assists in the
communication of knowledge, and its development and exchange;
3.
e-learning itself as an educational
subject; such courses may be called "Computer Studies" or "Information and Communication
Technology (ICT)";
4.
e-learning administrative
tools such as education
management information systems (EMIS).
Electronic Commerce and its Benefits in
Modern Life
Electronic
commerce
Electronic commerce,
commonly known as E-commerce or eCommerce,
is trading in products or services conducted via computer networks such as the
Internet. Electronic commerce draws on technologies such as mobile
commerce, electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet marketing, online transaction processing, electronic data interchange (EDI), inventory management systems, and
automated data
collection systems.
Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World
Wide Web at
least at one point in the transaction's life-cycle, although it may encompass a
wider range of technologies such as e-mail, mobile
devices, social media, and telephones as well.
Electronic commerce is
generally considered to be the sales aspect of e-business. It also consists of
the exchange of data to facilitate the financing and payment aspects of
business transactions. This is an effective and efficient way of communicating
within an organization and one of the most effective and useful ways of
conducting business. It is a Market entry strategy where the company may or may not have a
physical presence.
In the past,
if we wanted to buy a product or item, we had to go to different shops and
compare the prices offered by various shops. It used take a lot of time and
used to be tiring too walking around so much, especially when the weather is
extreme or you have other important things to take care of or you need a
product which is not found in your neighborhood .Luckily, we have e-commerce
now also known as electronic commerce. It basically means buying and selling of
products and services over electronic systems like the internet and other kinds
of computer networks. It is constantly evolving at a fast rate according to the
changes and trends of the market. E-commerce has many benefits both for the
company selling its products and for the consumers too. As we live in a
capitalistic world, where free market is the norm- various companies are competing
with each other and finding different methods to increase their sales and
profits. E-commerce web development service has gained popularity as it greatly
helps in increasing the profits of a company. It also gives the company an
effective tool to expose the potential of the company and its products and
services at a global level. E-commerce software development gives a company a
safe and efficient method of marketing their products and provides an instant
and reliable means of communication with their consumers. Due to its efficiency
and ease of use, customer base becomes larger, customers are satisfied and they
become loyal consumers for the company. Applications of software development
for e-commerce are the following
One of the
main benefits of e-commerce is the convenience it offers to the consumers. You
can shop for your favorite things while relaxing at your favorite couch in the
comfort of your home. Now people need not go through the hassle of visiting
multiple stores looking for the product they need. They can just go online,
search for the product they want, find the lowest price instantly and order for
the product and it will be delivered to your doorstep. Another benefit is
consumers can visit the websites of the products they are interested in and can
order for that product 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Another advantage of
ordering through the internet is that since the products are not kept in a physical
retail shop, a lot of expense is saved and you can get products at a lower
price, plus they can have a much wider customer base. They can attract hundreds
of thousands of consumers as almost everyone has access to the internet and
e-commerce now thanks to website software development .Most of the time, the
products offered by e-commerce companies have a lower price compared to
conventional stores as the products are delivered directly to the customer by
the manufacturer without the involvement of any middle mediators .To summarize,
a lot of e-commerce websites have come up as well as web development service providers.
There is cut-throat competition in the market, so if you want your online
business to grow, it is advisable to hire professional web software development
service providers to make sure that your website is unique, user friendly and
the products and services you are providing are highlighted perfectly.
